Flatonia Emergency Sirens Notice and Operation
The city has five emergency sirens that will alert the local population of severe weather (tornado) or other emergency.
The downtown siren alone sounds every day at 12:00 noon. This is commonly referred to as the "Noon Whistle."
The first WEDNESDAY of every month, the entire system, all five (5) sirens, will sound for 90 seconds beginning at 12:00 noon. This allows the backup batteries to discharge and recharge to ensure system operation.
In the event of a TORNADO WARNING (not a Tornado Watch) in our geographical location, emergency personnel from Flatonia have the authority and will activate the entire system, all five (5) sirens. The sirens will discharge for a total of three (3) minutes using the same flat tone you hear everyday during the Noon Whistle.
IF YOU HEAR THE SIRENS RUNNING, PLEASE MONITOR NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FEEDS,
THE CITY WEBSITE, FACEBOOK AND LOCAL RADIO PROVIDERS FOR INFORMATION
AND SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY.
In the event we have a CITY-WIDE EMERGENCY, such as a train derailment, chemical spill, or other hazardous event that is not weather related, the City of Flatonia emergency personnel have the authority and will activate the emergency system, all five (5) sirens for a three (3) minute discharge. The tone will be very different from the TORNADO WARNING tone and oscillates up and down in pitch. This tone means to SHELTER INPLACE UNTIL INSTRUCTED BY EMERGENCY PERSONNEL. Monitor the City website, Facebook, or call city hall for instructions AT (361) 865-3548.
