The Flatonia Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is a Type B Corporation organized under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The EDC's purpose and authorization is described in Chapters 501 and 505 of the Texas Local Government Code to include (but not limited to) financing projects such as land, land acquisition, building, equipment, facilities, expenditures, targeted infrastructure, and improvements falling within its guidelines. A City election was held on May 6, 2017 granting this authorization.
The Certificate of Formation for the EDC was deemed effective by the Texas Secretary of State on September 25, 2017, and reinstated on May 7, 2018. The initial Bylaws of the Corporation were adopted in December 2017 and later amended with the last revision in June 2020 by City Council Resolution 2020.6.1.
The EDC does not have members but does have Directors. Two Directors are Flatonia City Councilmembers. Five Directors shall be non-City employees and must be either:
- a resident of the city of Flatonia
- a resident of Fayette County
- a resident of a place within ten miles of the City's boundaries and within a county bordering Fayette County.
The City Manager and City Secretary are ex-officio Directors with no voting privileges.
The EDC normally meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month. The staff contacts for the EDC are the City Manager or the City Secretary.
